Sabbath Habits

The point of the Sabbath is, as John Mark Colmer writes, “… to let our souls catch up to our bodies.” This is the heart of Sabbath Habits: to capture the essence of the Sabbath, the Judeo-Christian practice of devoting one day weekly to rest and worship, as God defines it. This photo series marks restful moments suspended in time — meaningful conversations, good food, and sunshine. With this project, I have experienced something I never knew I was missing: revival. By documenting people’s habits on the Sabbath, I have learned the power of slowing down myself. Sabbath Habits challenges our busy culture and aims to underscore how imperative this practice is to the soul.

In August 2023, I began photographing loved ones on the Sabbath. After reading The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by Colmer, I was inspired to capture the still moments that are often rushed past. What began as an unshakable desire to find the beauty in the mundane evolved into the body of work that would become Sabbath Habits. Digital photography was the perfect medium to document this series, as it allowed me to capture fleeting moments that can change in an instant. Through these slice-of-life documentary style photographs, I have traced a line between all my subjects as they aim to mimic Jesus’ unhurried lifestyle.
